So this self-esteem book has a whole section on planning to achieve your goals, whether they are very short-term goals at work, at home, etc., or longer-term ones in life. What I liked is that it tacked the stumbling blocks to achieving the goals and offered suggestions for overcoming them.

Stumbling Blocks to Achieving Goals:

1) Insufficient Planning: you must break down your large goals into small, discreet steps. Trying to achieve a major life goal all at once is like trying to swallow a whole loaf of bread in one gulp. You must take one bite at a time or you will choke.

2) Insufficient Knowledge: a very common stumbling block that requires overcoming a fear of asking for help.

3) Poor Time Management: if you are already juggling more balls than you can comfortably keep in the air, adding even one new goal may be one ball too many. Either become a better juggler or decide which balls to drop.

4) Unrealistic Goals: This is a form of self-sabotage. When you set unrealistic goals, you guarantee failure and continued low self-esteem.

5) Fear of Failure: While normal for everyone, this can be a huge stumbling block for people with low self-esteem.

6) Fear of Success: This is more rare but it’s actually a fear of delayed failure. You fear becoming successful for fear that ultimately you will fail. “The higher you climb, the farther you fall.”

Deconstruction Exercise

    Overall Goal

1. What information do I need?
2. How much time do I need each day or week?
3. How much money do I need?
4. Whose help do I need?
5. What resources or services do I need?
6. What would be the earliest sign that I was starting to accomplish my goal? (first step)
7. How would I know I was well on my way to accomplishing my goal? (middle steps)
8. How would I know I had fully accomplished my goal? (final step)

There are so many other great tips in this book and the accompanying workbook. I’m trying to get through it all but I found this especially helpful for me in not catastrophizing situations and getting stuck/overwhelmed.

Go check out these nonprofits and click on the top 5 most deserving to win free e-mail accounts through Emma.

What’s Emma 25?
The Emma 25 program was started 5 years ago by Emma, an email marketing company based in Nashville, as a way to donate email marketing services to deserving non-profits. The idea is simple: Emma’s customers have nominated non-profits that could use Emma accounts to stay in touch with donors, coordinate volunteers and spread the word about the great work they do. They have posted those fabulous nominees here, and the top 25 non-profits you vote for will be this year’s honorees.

My mother and her best artsy friend are in the house making memory rings right now. Basically they have a large gold ring that you tie ribbons to and you decorate the ribbons with beads, medallions, etc., then tie single-hole-punched index cards or photos to the end of the ribbon. You can hang it on a hook in your house or on a door handle and review the memories whenever the mood strikes. I think they look neat. :)

I’m not very crafty. The closest I ever got was making handmade hanging plant holders with my roommate in New Mexico one year. I enjoy crafting, just am not very artistically inclined. However, I did make t-shirts this year. Should you like them and want to buy one, Spreadshirt is having a Cyber Monday sale all week long with 25% off any purchase of $30 or more. Coupon codes: USD$: CYBER58, CAD$: CADCYBER58.

Do any of you have ideas for crafts that people will actually use? I’ve looked around and it seems to all be the same old stuff. Jars of mix for a soup, cake or something. Homemade candles. Baking. I want something unique!

My mother sent me out to hunt down a Nintendo DS for my nephew on Black Friday. I finally realized everyone was pretty much selling it for the same price ($129) and just ponied up her money for it. Then today I found out that Amazon is selling a limited edition Pink Ribbon version for only $99 and free shipping with $5 from each sale going to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Had I known, I might have tried to get that one and cover it with a “manly” blue or black case so he wouldn’t know the difference. ;) LOL. Anyway, for those of you looking for a Nintendo deal, I wanted to put out the word.

EDITED: Apparently they only had a limited number because it now shows a $129 price. However, I know it was $99 because I ordered one for my neighbor this morning (she wanted to use my free two-day Prime shipping) and the order still reflects the $99 price (just checked). Sorry guys.

My super-hawt fellow MILP (hell, we are all super hawt – if you haven’t seen us IRL with our awesome Mommy racks, you are missing out!), Trannyhead, challenged her readers to write about the most delicious of topics, Green Beans. If you have never had green beans, I suggest you go over to TrannyHead’s blog and read all about the wonderousness, especially if, like her, you have to wait MONTHS to consume Green Beans with your husband because of a inconvenient war on the other side of the world. Anyway, since I have never been one to turn down a Tranny, here is my totally TMI (what did you expect?!?!) take on the topic (Blue Eyes, you can just skip to the bottom ‘kay?):

You might say “Duh” when you hear this, but I’ve been a regular green bean consumer for years. And a happy one at that. But you might be surprised to hear that I didn’t start consuming green beans until I was 18 (except for one bad experience at 15 that my therapist says doesn’t count). It wasn’t for lack of offers, but more because of my weird “good girl” core. I didn’t want to have sex until I was able to take care of any products of said consumption. Heck, until I discovered the super deliciousness of green beans, I wasn’t even consuming them alone. Yes, except for the one makeout session under a New Jersey pier with a boy from bible camp and an embarrassing plane makeout on a transcontinental flight with my now-ex-federal-con boyfriend  , my teen years were rather repressed.

Fortunately salvation came in the form of a beautiful Honduran chef who spent his days serving politicians and pundits at a fancy Foggy Bottom establishment and his nights serving me at a hotel across the street from said restaurant. Hubba-hubba. It was totally hawt. Unfortunately, as is the case with super-hot Green Beans, other girls wanted a taste. And, after I underwent major surgery and was laid up on my back for several months, even though he was very giving ( ), he ultimately needed more than my battered body could offer and, after dating me for about 9 months, he gave in to a waitress at work. I was crushed.

Fortunately my Best Gay Friend helped me heal with trips to the local “toy store” and bought me one of these. And I found that eating green beans alone could be almost as satisfying and much more emotionally safe than sharing the green beans with others. Sure, I ventured out and tried some Cypriot green beans (a little too fuzzy and not very filling). :???: Spicy Mexican green beans. And, finally, I discovered Guatemalan green beans and decided they were pretty delicious and would suit me just fine. My pocketbook was much heavier with less frequent trips to the toy store (except for this, which is awesome for partnered sex). Monogamous green beans rock. And, even after 8 years, never got stale… for me, anyway.

Unfortunately, while I would be perfectly content consuming green beans 1-2x/week, Chapin was a hungry guy who needed to eat daily (whether I liked it or not) and ultimately his hunger overwhelmed him. As my readers know, he went the way of the hot Honduran. He also tended to think that because he couldn’t get enough green beans, neither would I. He had a high opinion of my attractiveness and desirability and was convinced that no man could resist me. ROFL. So his insecurity led him to turn his own insatiable green bean appetite on me and convince himself that I must have been sampling other green beans. And you know how that worked out.

Six months later, I’ve sampled a variety of green beans, talked way too much about green beans, read a lot of green bean blogs, had green beans via webcam, had green beans via text (at work!), and even had green beans with a married (but separated) man  . Ultimately, however, I found a gourmet green bean that is amazingly delicious. I’m preparing them in ways I never have before and thoroughly enjoying myself. Looking back, I was very lucky to have started my green bean journey with a good lover (I was 18/he was 30) because I’ve only had yummy experiences, with only a few varieties that didn’t suit me. My friends talk about spending years in relationships with stale, canned no-name green beans. I have high standards for my green beans and have never had a problem asking for garnish or trying a new preparation and fortunately the guys I have been with aren’t shy either. I think that helps keep the green beans new and interesting.

So, readers, my best recipe for tasty green beans is as follows:

1) Don’t be afraid to eat green beans with different people and figure out what you like
2) Discover how to pop the lid off of your Green Beans (and his… tee-hee)
3) Spend some quality time consuming green beans alone. Great stress relief!
4) Once you settle on a brand, don’t be afraid to add in some condiments or spices to keep things fresh and new!

Happy Thanksgiving. May it be tasty in every way. (I, for one, will be eating steamed green beans and not having any “green beans” this weekend – boo hiss.) Blue Eyes has family over, as do I, so, although we may see each other, we’re both too old and inflexible for up-against-a-wall quickies so I think we’ll probably be pretty hungry by Sunday when the guests leave.) Fortunately he did see me a new picture of “the eyes” so I have a little inspiration if I find a few minutes of alone time. Hubba-hubba.

P.S. Sweetheart, here is another good reason God invented laptops… portability. Merry Christmas to me?

So the holiday season is upon us and many people are trying to figure out how to celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah without breaking the bank. (See my follow-up post with discount codes here). Here are a few ideas:

Bosses/Coworkers:

Donations: I know some people think this sucks but I think it’s a great idea. I find a charity that matches something the person likes. For example, one year I had a vegan crunchy boss and a boss who was very involved in local literacy efforts. I made a small ($10-20) donation in their names to an animal rescue organization and a local school literacy program, respectively, and printed the receipts on card stock. The amount wasn’t shown so for all they knew it could have been way more. I went to World Market and bought some neat but relatively inexpensive wine, punched a hole in the corner of the card stock and tied it with a ribbon to the bottle’s neck. CNN has some excellent tips for charitable holiday giving. You could also get a bag of gourmet pasta and sauce and attach this $7 utensil holder (sits on the side of the pot) from Sur La Table. A lot of the nicer household goods stores have inexpensive but seriously functional items to throw in a gift basket. Container Store is a good one for fun, inexpensive desk items, too. What about a bunch of travel-size items or travel-size containers for the colleague who travels a lot? Or find a magazine a whole group loves and agree to subscribe to an office copy for the lunchroom. Or everyone brings in a used book to start an office library. We used an old closet with shelves to do ours at once place I worked.

One donation idea: make a donation in their name to CARE to help empower women worldwide. Right now they have a matching gift program going on.

In the past year, CARE’s work reached 65 million people in 71 countries. Thanks to donors like you, poor families got the resources they needed to send their children to school, combat the spread of HIV/AIDS, learn new business skills and build a better life for themselves. CARE also delivered emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, and helped people rebuild their lives.

Family:

If you have talented family members, how about swapping lessons in something? The guitar player could offer guitar lessons, the masseuse massages, the CPA basic budgeting, the knitter could teach others her craft. Hold Christmas reunions AFTER Christmas to take advantage of post-holiday discounts. Another great idea is to make cute photo ornaments. I have done this twice. Once I went to Oriental Trading, got some cute and seriously cheap ornament picture frames and put my son’s picture in and gave those. The other time I picked up some super-cheap ornament picture frames and put an anniversary picture of my recently deceased grandparents in and gave one to each of my cousins. It was a hit. You could also do a photo collage of the family or hand out something baked with a $1 or $5 lottery scratchoff attached. My grandparents’ favorite gift one year was a memory jar. We all wrote our favorite memories of them and stuck them in a large jar for them to pull out whenever they wanted to remember. You could also do a family recipe book where you ask every family member to bring their favorite family recipe and then you compile them in a book or printout to send to all. Here’s a cute idea for your kids to make for grandparents or other family members using old CDs. Another twist on the Memory Jar idea is word cloud art. Create a personalized word cloud at Wordle.net using all sorts of words to describe them. Wordle lets you customize layout and then you can print it in color and stick it in an inexpensive frame.

Teachers:
Oriental Trading again. One year I got a dozen really cute gauze stocking ornaments for like $6. They were the perfect size for a few pieces of really nice chocolate, a candy cane and, of course, a gift card to iTunes, Target, or somewhere else they liked. You can also get a few small brown gift bags and have your kid use stamps or markers to decorate them and then do the same thing.

Your Kids:

Homemade clay, bottles of bubbles, or a collage of fun family photos for the wall in their room. Homemade coupons for things like 1/2 hour bike riding with Dad or one game of Monopoly. What about getting a puzzle for you all to do on Christmas Day? Or get discount Christmas movies and spend the day having a movie marathon on the couch (you can even borrow DVDs from the library or get used copies at your local used bookstore)?

Your Best Friend:
Send her a Babeland gift certificate because, really, every girl should have a Sasi or a Gigi (now on sale for $50 less than I paid!) or, if your best friend is a man, apparently the Fleshlight is pretty cool. Or homemade coupons for a night out on the town, a manicure (performed by you, of course), a back rub, a night of babysitting his/her kid(s) or a weekend of petsitting. Blockbuster gift certificates and gourmet popcorn. A single mom t-shirt!

Spouses
If you’re looking to spice things up, how about the “Movie” Starter Kit or even the Sexy Getaway Kit from Babeland. Great way to sample a few things without spending a ton. Coupons for massages, movie nights, chores, etc., are also awesome — just be willing to actually perform the task when they’re handed over! Homemade picture albums or memory-type items are always great keepsakes, especially if you write a little about each picture. My friend finds an activity her very busy husband likes and tells him to go do that every two weeks on a Saturday or a weeknight, guilt free. He likes that gift. Then there’s always O’My products to make downtown adventures (for either of you) even more exciting. Or the Liberator Wedge to help save his back and yours.

Can I just say that I love, love, love all things Google and have since forever. Nothing like searching your e-mail by words just to find something. I send EVERYTHING to my Gmail account. Just today I searched it for a copy of my divorce decree and for a copy of Pumpkinhead’s passport. Two words “passport” and “PDF” and there it was. Same with the decree. Today when I opened up my Gmail, suddenly a whole new world was in sight. THEMES! LABS!! VIDEO CHAT!!! I could seriously fall over in total bliss right now (okay, I would, but I have 1300 titles to match to employee names in the most evil spreadsheet ever for work and it has to be done by COB tomorrow – crap!) So I’m off to work but had to take a moment out to give Google its due. Thank you, Googly People!!

Made it to class and then left a few minutes early to get to my masseuse by 8. My mother is sponsoring weekly stress relief from now until finals (yay Mom!) and my masseuse agreed to charge the $39 half-hour rate if I come weekly for an hour. I am a wet noodle right now! Trying to stay awake so I can get at least some tasks accomplished before bed.

Listening to SheDaisy while I work. I forgot how much I enjoy their music. Two selections for your listening enjoyment:
