OTC Morning-After Pill

23 Mar

The NY Times reports that a Federal Judge ruled today that the FDA must relax restrictions on the morning-after pill and offer it to girls as young as 17 without a prescription. However, it does still have to be offered behind pharmacy counters. While I agree that the behind-counter measure provides some sort of protection against young girls using this as their primary birth control method without any counseling from doctors or parents, I think it also serves to intimidate, especially in small towns. Hopefully the FDA will fully relax the restrictions and allow it to be sold without behind-counter measures.

That said, the fact that it is so readily available and to girls so young means that there needs to be way more public awareness and education about using it as an emergency measure, not a primary line of defense against unplanned pregnancy. I’d also worry about girls who have been assaulted. If their only concern is pregnancy and it is alleviated here, will this reduce the number of girls reporting their assaults and seeking examination? The whole thing concerns me, even though the feminist in me understands the reasoning behind it and supports that. Still, education is key.

Ultimate Blog Party

23 Mar

Welcome readers from 5 Minutes for Mom’s Annual Ultimate Blog Party. Last year’s celebration was a lot more fun around here. This year’s been a bit of a downer as I recover from a divorce last summer and try to find “me” and learn to be okay with being single after eight years of marriage. So, visitors, I’m going to ask you to do this Mom a favor. Tell me about one activity that you really love doing. Maybe you do it alone, maybe with kids, but it’s something you do that you love and it’s fairly easy to get started doing. Help me get out there and start learning how to hang out with myself!

Ultimate Blog Party 2009

Now pull up a chair, have a Steinlager, and read a bit more about me. All commenters will be entered in a drawing to win one of several prizes, including a copy of the latest Brain/Child Magazine, The Pocket Parent, or a talking purse-sized photo album. Make sure you leave an e-mail or link to your blog below so I can contact you if you win. I will pick a random comment number for each prize when UBP ends.

More about PT-LawMom;
1) I am 30 years old and a dual citizen of New Zealand/United States
2) Mother to Pumpkinhead (5) (inter-racial child – Hispanic/Caucasian) Photobucket
3) Was a part-time law student at night until December; 34 credits under my belt and it looks like I will be putting it on hold.
4) Have a great job in the legal department of a large corporation. Love my work and just got offered the chance to take on more responsibility (hence the pause button on law school – that and the extra debt with no guaranteed payoff right now…)
5) Medically nutty (Don’t have any “extra” organs left, had a RNY gastric bypass 8 years ago, have peripheral neuropathy, fibromyalgia, malnutrition, etc. Just a ton of fun to be around. Just make sure I take my CrazyMedz and I will be fine.)
6) My son is a genius (okay, so I’m his Mom, but he loves to read and does it well, sings at the top of his lungs everywhere we go and writes me beautiful e-mails and love letters).
7) The best thing I did after my divorce was to get a kitten. Shirley the Cool Cat cuddles with me and my son every time either of us is down. She greets us at the door, talks to us, cuddles us, and generally keeps us company during this hard year.
8) The best purchase I ever made as a Mom was a Dyson. Bought it when Pumpkinhead was three months old. I LOVE my vacuum cleaner. Awesome customer service, easy to clean, yay, yay, yay. Worth every penny!
9) I’m trying to get re-involved in church right now and am starting to remember all the things I used to enjoy about having that community around me.
10) I’m also dipping my toes in and out of the dating pool. It’s scalding… Baby steps. ;)

There are a lot of prizes available at the Ultimate Blog Party. My top five hoped-for are as follows:
#89 $100 Home Goods gift certificate
#19 $50 Target gift certificate
#26 $50 Gift Vouchers to Hatley (PJs!!!)
#47 $25 Amazon gift certificate
#25 Phineas & Ferb DVD (my son loves them!)

Thanks for visiting! Be sure to use the calendar or search tools to read some old posts. The stuff from most recently has been fairly blah.
