Where I was when…

12 Feb

Stolen from LS Part-Timer, who stole it from New Kid on the Hallway.

1.) Challenger space shuttle exploded (1986): I was in New Zealand. Wasn’t really on my radar screen.

2.) Berlin Wall falls down (1989): In NZ. Young. I remember it, but not well enough to really remember much except the images from the news.

3.) Oklahoma City federal building bombing (1995): In high school in Pennsylvania. I remember watching the news. That was pretty upsetting.

4.) OJ Verdict (1995): I was in high school with my favorite social studies teacher. They stopped classes and announced the verdict over the loud speakers.

5.) Princess Diana dies (1997): I know EXACTLY where I was. I was in Georgetown University Hospital recovering from a spleenectomy, in pain and unable to sleep, and watched it from the first news reports until they reported her death. I was really upset. Then my whole family watched the funeral once I was released from the hospital.

6.) Columbine massacre (1999): I must have been in New Mexico. I remember watching the coverage but I don’t remember when I first heard or what I was doing.

7.) JFK Jr. Plane crash (1999): I remember hearing it on the news and feeling sad for the woman who was getting married and would always associate her cousin’s death with her marriage. :(

8.) Bush/Gore crazy election (2000): This was the first time I voted. I was convinced I was jinxed after that. Damn Bush. Grr.

9.) September 11, (2001): I was living in Alexandria, VA a few miles up the road from the Pentagon. I was home sick and woke up to the Today show and the second plane hitting. Then I literally felt my apartment shake as fighter jets were scrambled. It was probably the scariest day of my life. My Dad was supposed to be at the State Department for a meeting and there were rumors that it was a target. It took my husband almost 6 hours to get home when it should have taken only 45 minutes tops. It was an extraordinarily scary day, followed by weeks of horror made worse by the most unimaginable smell of death and fire and evil coming out of the Pentagon. I used to drive right by where it hit every day until they closed that section of the highway off after the plane hit.

10.) Space ship Columbia disintegrates (2003): I was pregnant with Pumpkinhead and don’t remember much about this.

11.) Hurricane Katrina hits (2005): Katrina hit as we were packing up our house in DC. The days we drove from DC to Texas were the days when New Orleans was flooding. When we hit the Texas border, people started inviting us in and offering us free food (our cars were loaded with stuff so they must have mistaken us for refugees). With Pumpkinhead in the car and just listening to kids’ music, CDs or watching his DVDs, we had absolutely no idea what was going on out in the real world. Talk about a shock!
