Psuedostoops is getting her blog audience to help her make her annual charitable donations in a really creative way and I decided to steal her idea for my blog.

The economy sucks and many people are struggling but many non-profits that depend on donations are also having a really rough time of things. I am about to get some extra unexpected money that will be useful for bills, medication and other expenses, but I will also be able to part with a bit to make a charitable donation, which is what I typically do with holiday bonuses, tax refunds and other unexpected monies (I truly believe that you get back whatever you give). So, here goes (totally plagiarizing here, but for a good cause):

For the next five days, I’m going to feature one organization each day. I’m hoping that I can spread the word on some places that are quietly doing very cool work, the kinds of places that might be really hurting as people are unable to give as much in these lean times. I’ll tell you a little about the organization and its mission, give you a link to more info, and then YOU will determine the amount of the donation I make.

Here’s how it’s going to work:

1. I’ll put up a post featuring the organization.

2. I’ll guarantee a minimum $25 donation to that organization.

3. For every comment I receive on that post, I’ll donate an additional $0.25, (capped at a max of $40 for each organization just in case I get a bazillion comments!).

4. Here’s the twist: I have four organizations in mind to feature. Friday is open. I’m hoping that in addition to me telling you about some of my favorite causes, you will use the comments section to tell me a little about some organizations near and dear to your heart.

If you have a favorite organization, perhaps one that is smaller and deserves a little support this holiday season, name it in the comments, and provide a link if you have one (if you’re participating every day, you can name several different organizations, or just name the same one four times to show the depth of your love for them!) I’ll research each organization suggested in the comments, and will chose five finalists. On Friday, I’ll name the five finalists, and will set up a poll for people to vote on which one should receive a final $50 donation.

Here’s my first organization:

Houston Interfaith Ministries – Refugee Services

As you can imagine, Houston has a high number of refugees arriving daily who require shelter, a decent job, a kind word, etc., and the people at Houston Interfaith Ministries help legally admitted immigrants (i.e., post-USCIS proceedings) get settled in this huge and often overwhelming city.

Refugee and Cuban Resettlement

Provides resettlement services to newly-arrived individuals. This includes providing basic needs (housing, furniture, food); helping clients apply for state and other assistance, school enrollment, and ESL classes; and employment preparation.

Match Grant

Offers case management and employment services to eligible clients within six months of arrival. Works with community partners to collect in-kind donations for families.

Employment

Aids in assisting refugee and Cubnas to find employment in the Houston area. We provide clients with intensive orientation regarding how to acquire and maintain a job. Interfaith works with employers looking for highly-motivated employees with strength and character.

Cultural Orientation

Teaches newly-arrived clients the culture, customs and laws of the local community in order to aid the process of assimilation and integration.

Case Management

Enables clients to resolve issues that could prevent them from becoming self-sufficient. Helps clients address medical problems, access government assistance and deal with individual and family issues.

Refugee Cash Assistance

As a sub-contractor of the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, provides cash and rental assistance to eligible clients.

Now come comment on this post to help raise additional money for this great cause. I will have another one tomorrow and every day. Tell me about a grassroots organization in your community that could use a few dollars to help a cause close to your heart and I will post five on Friday for you all to vote on a winner. Thanks! P.S. It was this song by Mary Chapin Carpenter that I kept listening to as I was deciding whether or not to go to law school. Hopefully after my semester’s break, I will get back to the idealistic person who really felt motivated by hearing these words.

I need a personal assistant. Seriously. The tree isn’t up (but blame that on my parents) and the Santa Clause letter was not mailed (oops, all me). I have a pile of beautiful Christmas cards I ordered through Trannyhead’s VistaPrint affiliate link (see, I always reciprocate!) and a letter to be written (yes, I am one of those people) but I have to get stamps and God knows when I will get to the post office since I didn’t make it this weekend. Pumpkinhead has a nasty cold, work is insane, I have my final paper due on Friday, I have to purchase pajamas for Pumpkinhead so he can go to PJ day on Friday and make sure he takes a gift to his teacher on Thursday, and I have a root canal scheduled for Thursday morning. And I think I ticked off Blue Eyes somehow. Haven’t heard from him all day even though I’ve sent him several messages and I’m bummed. Four more days until life should calm down a bit more…

EDITED TO ADD: He’s not ticked – his phone was dead all day. LOL. Man, I am a crazy girl.

P.S. On the plus side, I did get my Mom’s Christmas present taken care of today. She used to love this show when I was growing up so I got her the boxed set of Remington Steele – Seasons 1-5 during Amazon’s boxed DVD set sale. I also got Pumpkinhead’s karate teacher and bus driver Amazon.com Gift Card because they now have an option where you can print a really pretty color gift certificate at home. Throw a few chocolates in and you are all set!

So I was looking over the last 30 days of how people found my blog and found a few interesting ones:

The number of variations of my blog moniker are mind-boggling. In case it isn’t clear, the name is Part-time Law Mom. I.e., I’m a part-time mom, part-time law student because God knows I am giving nothing 100%. The “correct” abbreviation is PT-LawMom (because the PT modifies both Law and Mom).

To the person looking for “Vicious Secretaries in Pantyhose”, I keep the pics from my long-ago Secretary days under lock and key, buddy. But you could probably find some of that stuff at Babeland and if you click through to them and buy something, I’ll have enough of a Christmas tip to buy some lacy thigh-highs of my own. ;) (Disclaimer: of course I am joking. No legal secretary worth her salt will so much as wink at her boss in that way. Doesn’t mean you can’t be a “naughty secretary” at home, though…)

“Tips for Legal Secretary Blacklining” — Not sure what kind of help you need with that. There are lots of programs out there. My preference was always to type the doc clean and do a comparison afterwards or just do a merge if the other side wanted to accept/reject changes. I hate Track Changes!!! For awesome Word/tech tips, see The Connected Lawyer.

“Single parent and its effect on the Jamaican society” — single parents rock. Go here for more proof!

“Mom _____ _____ her son” — you sick bastard!!! You need help.

“Basics of Being a Good Legal Secretary” — Go to NALS.org. Sign up for the ALS and PLS exams. Only work for lawyers that value your opinion and your brain. Request feedback and then put the constructive criticism to good use by doing it better next time. When all else fails, move on, embrace the fat raise that comes from the move and love the fact that good legal secretaries get paid very, very well to take that bullshit (more than most non-BigLaw first-year lawyers in many cases).

“What are qualities that make a good legal secretary” — See above. And I would say attention to detail, ability to take the initiative COMBINED WITH the ability to do what is asked of you (some attorneys HATE initiative and you have to be willing to suck it up and do it their way even when you know it is wrong or stupid), strong technical skills (nothing like getting a 50-page brief at 11:30 p.m. that is due for e-filing at 11:59 p.m. only to find a million evil formatting gremlins throughout the document), fast typing speed (most places require 65wpm minimum), discretion, pleasant personality and strong organizational skills (don’t use my messy ass desk and disdain for filing as your example).

And, of course, I get a lot of variations of searches on mothers, MILFs and porn. Here’s what I would suggest. Go to Babeland, buy/download some movies and leave my blog alone. I won’t be posting Mommy porn anytime soon, guys. Sorry. ;)

Ten worst dates — you can read about them all here and, please, share yours. It’s fun!

Well I sort of buy that. But I think the columnist at the New York Times who wrote about this trend misses something important. A lot of people spend time communicating online or through social networking so they have “dated” in a sense before they sleep together. In our over-scheduled lives, especially for single parents, it’s often hard to find people you connect with. So if you meet a guy at your kid’s soccer game or in a coffee shop and you just can’t find time to connect again except online, I can totally see how you might find yourself a month later (after phone conversations, texting and, um, webchats  ) meeting him for sex before you move on to the time-suck that is “dating”. I KNOW this is not uncommon (okay, fine, been there!). Speak up other single parents. Validate my theory. ;)
