Well before Chapin called and I got all fired up about the attorney, I was in a fairly good mood. I had just arrived home (late, of course, because since I took yesterday off of work for my final I came back to a bazillion tasks today) and had opened the mail.

I was psyched to find this*:

But also disappointed because I first have to get through reading this (and then some) and writing a huge research paper:

And then there are these piles sitting around my room waiting for finals to end (yes, I know, waaayyy too much chick lit and self help, but I haven’t bought a “good” non-works/school book in probably two years):

Crime Novels Chick Lit Self Help
Erotica

Okay, I’m down to a simmer and I’m more relaxed at the prospect of someday getting to read these books. Now back to work!

I am so pissed. Chapin went to see his immigration attorney tonight. You know, the one who took $5,000 of our money as a retainer and ended up filing a four-page “brief” in appeal of his citizenship denial. The last bill we got said that we had roughly $900 left in our account and she said we could file a supplementary brief if we wanted. We chose to wait to see what USCIS said. Well now, a year later, the USCIS came back and denied his appeal. They apparently think he has three children, one of which has the same name his two last names who he “concealed” which means he has bad moral character! Yes, someone at the local USCIS office is a FREAKING MORON!!!!! ARGH. And I don’t think we can appeal the appeal. Especially not after already spending $4,100. And, oh yeah, we’re divorced so Ms. Opinionated doesn’t have a say anymore. ;) Chapin is worried that making waves will just piss USCIS off further.

Anyway, what pisses me off is not that his citizenship was denied (even though they are fucking stupid because they never even asked him during his interview about the issue upon which he is being denied and he was 100% truthful in his petition). What makes me furious is the damn immigration attorney. From the day she filed (by hand with only a handwritten receipt to prove filing), she has NEVER provided us with documents. She always swears she has mailed a copy of everything, but we never got a copy of the filing, nor a copy of the receipt, nor a copy of the USCIS denial letter despite requesting them numerous times. Every time we would call she would insist they must have been “lost in the mail”. And yet somehow her bills always made it to us…

Anyway, Chapin is beside himself and I tend to agree with him. This time last year she was saying we still had $900. Now she’s saying that, if anything, we owe her. For what?!?! We haven’t spoken to her since this time last year. AND I did all the transcription on her interview with Chapin and brought photocopies of all of the records up for her to our initial interview. The woman is on crack if she thinks we owe her. The problem I have is that, although I know I have the retainer agreement somewhere, it is probably in Chapin’s storage unit and will take some time to find.

My question for you is do we (and by we of course I mean him with me doing all the work – ugh!) file a claim with the bar against her for refusing to return the $900, failing to provide us with copies of any of the documents she produced for us and proof of filing and basically for being a mean and nasty bitch? Grrrr. What would you do?

So in case I needed proof that I’m losing my mind, I got it this morning in the shower. I’m standing there doing my thing, which of course includes responding to a variety of questions from Pumpknhead and talking to my mother who insists on coming in and using the bathroom while I am showering (never mind that she has her own master bath). Pumpkinhead’s latest obsession is math and he won’t stop bugging me to “give him a hard one” which I think means 7 + 2. The boy is literally counting in his sleep…

Anyhoo, I have my arm in the air over my head (shaving), I’m chatting with my peeps and I go to turn around in the shower…and see my hand. My gorked out drug-laden brain thinks someone is reaching into the shower, freaks me out, sends me flying and suddenly I’m doing the slip-n-slide pirouette move around the tub. Thank God we have a high towel bar in the shower or I would have busted my ass (or my head) on the tile. It’s a lovely day when you scare even yourself.

Exam is over. Woot! And I think I did fairly well. But of course i hesitate to say that because the rest of my classmates are MENSA-level geniuses who craft highly complex legal arguments for every essay question while I just regurgitate a bunch of crap. Either that or the professors all subscribe to this grading strategy (h/t – Concurring Opinions:

Anyway, I was feeling pretty good about how I did. Then I made the ultimate mistake of speaking to a classmate. Who of course said, “Did you talk about this?” “Um…” “What about this?” “Well….” It wasn’t all bad. She was making some obscure points so maybe the rest of the class sucks like me and only she is that smart. Or maybe I’m AnchorGirl and it’s a darn good thing I’m taking a break. With that said, I’m off to take the meds. I was going to come home and have a beer, but these new meds knock me on my butt. So I’m drinking a cup of sugar-free hot chocolate because it is freaking cold outside and SNOWING (!!) for the first time in a few years I’m told and eating a teaspoon of goat cheese with lowfat wheat thins. Yum. Sigh… You should have heard me talking to my classmate. “Duh… der… um… uh….” Stupid anti-convulsants. Blah. I just need to walk around with two Blackberries and hand one over when anyone makes the mistake of trying to converse with me orally.

Next up for this weekend, a research paper due next Friday on asset forfeiture. I’ve done the research but have only really skimmed it. Also have two Christmas parties to attend. I can do it. Yes I can!
