Back to school
Anyone else taking summer classes? I have 100+ pages to read before June 2 and I haven’t even cracked the cover of my book. I am seriously envious of those of you with a whole summer off. That said, it’s amazing how fast the last year has passed by. For those people out there considering going back to school, what are you waiting for? It sucks while you’re in it, but the time passes so quickly. Hopefully my next three years will continue to move fast and I’ll be graduated before I know it.
Right now I’m taking it one day at a time. I suppose LawSchoolMom was correct that I’m a selfish mother. I was going to drop out to help Pumpkinhead through this time. but my family is encouraging me to keep going. Right now I plan to continue attending law school at night. My parents are going to help me continue to pay for our nanny and as long as I have someone to give Pumpkinhead consistency, I suppose I will keep attending school. Besides, it will take my mind off of things and, with any luck, provide Pumpkinhead with a better future.
Anyway, I have another week of freedom. Today I’m cleaning out my home office and moving it into the room adjoining our master bedroom. Chapin is insisting on staying in the house with Pumpkinhead until the divorce is finalized so I’m moving him a bit further away into the room that had been my home office. Sigh… At least it gives me a good excuse to get my office cleaned up and organized.

and you are absolutely NOT a selfish mother. This is a difficult and selfless thing that you are doing FOR your child. Don’t you dare forget that- or if you do- blog it so we can all correct you!

You are not being selfish. My parents divorced when I was sixteen. My mom went back to school so she could support us. All of the changes were difficult. BUT it was much better living with a mother who was happy then it was living in a conflicted house with parents who were soooo unhappy.

Good for you for continuing! You’re doing the best thing for you and your family, and that is what makes you a good mom!

Man - I’m in summer school classes, too - they start TOMORROW! I haven’t looked at the reading. Though, I don’t look at reading for non-summer classes either - but in a few short weeks I’ll be FINISHED WITH LAW SCHOOL!!!!

There are always the poor souls among us studying for the bar who are right there with you.
You are incredibly fortunate to have your family’s help through this difficult time, and you should take full advantage of it. Imagine how much better life will be for both you and Pumpkinhead when you become a lawyer. It’s not going to be easy (especially with Chapin still there), but hopefully it will be as amicable as possible for Pumpkinhead’s sake.
One interesting idea that I read in an advice column recently about parents going through a divorce with small children (where the parents were still living in the same house) was that each parent would have a “week on/week off” way of parenting, i.e. that during your “week on”, Pumpkinhead would have to listen to/ask you for permission to do things, and Chapin would direct him to ask you if he tried to get around it by going to Daddy. And vice-versa. I think anecdotally, it helped the child understand more fully the separation between Mommy and Daddy and eased the transition of one parent out of the house. Just a thought.

Lots of luck to you during this time - I think you’re a great mama to that little boy and good for you for continuing on toward that degree.
