Dakota and I are reading this together tonight (she is skipping class because she is crazy - see my blog for details) and she says "You are absolutely right. I could not do it without Casey's support. Our weeks are very tightly scheuled but between the two of us (with Casey doing the lion's share of EVERYTHING non-school, non-work related), we've managed to make it work."

I will add that it is impossible for her to get any study time in at home so she goes to her mom's house (nearby) to study all day Saturday. The kids find it impossible to leave her alone and it isn't fair to them or to Dakota to have her here. When she is home, I want her HOME and with us. Sunday is sacred family time. Yes, we usually spend it running errands, grocery shopping, etc but we're together and we always manage to find time to have some fun.

It's hard. It's hard for Dakota and it's definitely hard for me as the stay at home parent who is responsible for everything. It's hard for the kids, too, who crave Dakota's attention and time.

It's just hard. Let's hope it will be well worth it in the long run.

You guys have such a great arrangement. :) I think Chapin would be up for that kind of arrangement if he didn't have to work on Saturdays. With only one day home, he's just not willing to have me leave the house Sundays and Pumpkinhead, at 4 1/2, isn't self-sufficient enough to be left to his own devices on Saturdays so I spend most of the day entertaining him (plus I have Working Mommy guilt and miss him from being gone all week and we waste a lot of Saturday running errands).

I usually make breakfast for all of us Sunday morning and then head up to my office for several hours. Chapin is responsible for a mid-afternoon lunch/early dinner and watching Pumpkinhead until bedtime. Pumpkinhead typically interrupts me quite a bit, but if it gets too much I can usually convince Chapin to take him to the park or out for a bike ride unless he's mowing the lawn. It's hard because it's his only day off and if soccer is on or he is involved in a household chore, I hate to interrupt his plans for mine. We both have a lot on our plates right now.

WOW. That's your schedule?? I don't know you maintain that pace! You only see your kid for an hour and a half every day AND you work eight hours AND attend classes and study... and only get six hours of sleep each night?

I could not keep that up.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This has been a great eye opening read, and I really appreciate your sharing.

While I have already been turned down by one school I still have not heard from two of them. But I have 3 kids and work full-time so I might need to rethink my plan.

I want law school to be good experience, I don't want it to totally take over my life. At least not yet, not until my kids are older. So I might just need to wait.

Sometimes, the truth hurts.

PT Lawmom you are my hero, I know things will work out for the best for you. Especially after this kind of schedule.

This is an excellent article. You are superwoman I would also love to hear from other law school moms on this point of managing their time. I am hosting a carnival for moms in law at my site. I'd love if you would submit this post or any other that you may feel comfortable sending.
