I'm right now in the middle of a struggle with my brother, who has had charge of my elderly father's accounts for 6 years. Of course I trusted him -- until a couple of things raised suspicion, and I got 7 years worth of back bank records and found out that all this time he's been stealing from my father, from a generous cousin who helps pay for my father's support, and from me.

My own brother, the person on the planet with whom I share the most DNA.

And the worst of it is that even though he's been confronted with this, he refuses to "man up" and is saying that he was only "reimbursing himself" for other expenses he paid for my father. Plus he took out a mortgage on my dad's coop, which is Dad's only asset, so if something disastrous happened, he'd be destitute because of my brother's theft. We have tried to settle this within the family, but I'm very much afraid at this point that it may require legal action. It's also completely emotionally draining. I'm devastated.

Why is it always the people closest to us, the ones we trust the most? I've worked with domestic violence and sex abuse cases, and it's ALWAYS the people closest to us. The media would have us believe we have to fear strangers, reality would, sadly, teach us otherwise.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear it. One of my brothers went through a 900-number phase, and while he was house sitting, he stole one of our credit card numbers from a receipt and ran up a tab. Fury doesn't begin to cover it -- there's the acute disappointment and hurt that go along with it. I hope your parents are able to get this taken care of quickly -- and that the family member involved gets held accountable.

I'm sorry your parents were put through this, and on top of their recent health issues!

I did a legal services clinical last year working on predatory lending cases. It's shocking how often this happens -- often, it's a relative, friend, clergy member, or other trusted person who screws you over.
