Women in Law Book Club – Wednesday, November 28

26 Nov

Okay, ladies. Pumpkinhead woke up screaming in pain at 5 a.m. this morning and I’m told that he has major double ear infections. He’s been vomiting all day (with my Mom – I’m a lucky, lucky daughter!) and can’t keep either the antibiotic or Tylenol down. He was better this morning and has gotten worse all day. Went to the pediatrician at 4 p.m. so we’re probably in for a rough night once I make it home from school.

That said, I don’t have class Wednesday night so I will post my thoughts on “Nice Girls” then. I’m thinking we should just discuss in the comments unless someone has a better idea (maybe all those who read it do a blog post with their thoughts?) Thanks for your patience.

Book Club and Roundup Update

26 Nov

Got home late from our road trip to DC. Someone hit the brand new Big Ass Truck in the parking lot where we were staying and dealing with that delayed us (yep, hit and run so we’re stuck paying the deductible for the extensive damage  ). I am almost done with “Nice Girls”, but will have to delay discussion until tomorrow night at the earliest if that’s all right with all of you.

As for the Roundup, it’s after midnight now but I’m hoping that I can drag my rear out of bed early tomorrow to get to it. The problem is that I’ve been without Internet since Wednesday (except a short stint at a friend’s house) so whereas I’m usually on top of my Bloglines reading, I haven’t yet read any of the MILS entries this week. Bear with me if I don’t get to it until my lunch hour.

Other than the car damage, rain and the 24 hours it took each way to drive there, the trip was great. I really enjoyed seeing my SIL and BIL and meeting my newest nephew (10 months and walking already!) Pumpkinhead had a blast, especially running around with his cousins and then spending Friday with his Godmother and me. I also dragged my SIL out of bed at 4:30 a.m. on Friday so we could hit the mall (across the street) for a few hours before our kids woke up. We made it back by 7:30 a.m. laden with packages. Then I shopped more with my friend and Pumpkinhead, but I’m glad I made it out in the morning because it’s rare for me to be able to shop alone. Oh, I also managed to get online at my friend’s house to purchase my Blend Creations necklace (yay!) and to take advantage of Lancome’s 20% off Black Friday sale (when does makeup ever go on sale? Double yay!)

When we made it home tonight, I spent over an hour unpacking and putting things away and then spent the past two hours working on the outline I swore to my study partner I’d be ready to exchange with her today (she did one class; I did the other and now we’re switching and filling in each others’ gaps). I’ve never been a carsick kind of gal but apparently the dizziness I get from the Neurontin also makes it hard for me to read or use a laptop while the car is moving. I also had this issue the other day with a PowerPoint presentation for my boss. It appears that my peripheral vision can’t handle fast-moving images like flying text or moving vehicles. So much for my normal book-devouring road trips! I pretty much slept when I wasn’t driving.

Random enough blog post for everyone? It’s now 12:40 a.m. and I am hitting the hay!

Speedy Gonzales

21 Nov

It is 3:30 and I am just now grabbing a bite to eat. Thank God I had a protein shake on the way out the door this morning. All five of my assignments at work gave me serious, substantive stuff to do today (the gall!) so I’ve been flat-out all day. The only reason I’m taking a bloggy break now is that I will be without Internet connection for most of the weekend and I may go through withdrawal!

Fortunately, I have my casebooks and notes and I also have my copy of “Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office” so that I can read it and be ready to discuss by Monday. Does that still sound good for everyone? Have you had a chance to read some? It looks like the layout is very conducive to reading in spurts.

FYI, I got an e-mail from Vivian at Blend Creations. They will be having a sale Friday and the 15% off coupon code (CBB15) I gave out during my holiday gift recommendation post will also still be good. This is not sponsored in any way whatsoever, I just like to share a good deal. I already have my Mom on alert to shop for me if I can’t get online that day. :)

Okay, nose back to grindstone. So much for getting out of here early for our 23-hour drive to DC. I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you are all able to take time to be with the ones for which you are most thankful. I know I will be.

P.S. Misty — The title of this post reminds me to tell you that I promise to look at it and get back to you next week! :)

A Most Precious Gift

20 Nov

Last week, thanks to the amazing BlogHer Ads links (to recent posts by other BlogHer bloggers), I stumbled across the site of Carrie Evans, the Gremlin Wrangler. Carrie is a very talented artist with many of her works displayed here. I was impressed enough by that, but then I found her Etsy site and realized that she could do a pencil sketch of my son for a very reasonable price ($20 for the first single-person sketch and $15 for each additional). I thought, “What a great Christmas gift for my husband!”

I also decided to have her do a sketch of my grandmother and my cousin from last Thanksgiving (my Gramy passed away in January). Today Carrie sent me a draft of her final sketch. I requested a few modifications and the final product came out beautifully! I am sharing this with you today and would encourage you to consider patronizing Carrie in the future.* I know I cried when I saw how beautiful this came out so I can only imagine what my cousin’s reaction will be when she sees it framed. I am very thankful to have such a beautiful piece of art to share with my cousin this year as we deal with the harsh reality of having lost both of our grandparents in 2007.

*I have not been compensated for this post. Once I saw my picture, I asked Carrie if she would mind if I shared her information with all of you because I know there are others out there who would love to have pencil sketches of their kids or other loved ones. I think heirloom-type gifts like this are just perfect to give and pass on through the years.

Have you met PunditMom?

20 Nov

PunditMom is a mother, an attorney and a passionate advocate for the most important issues facing our nation today. Her posts are always inspiring, thoughtful and interesting. My favorite recent post was about voter apathy, but it was today’s Spin Cycle post on Republican candidates’ pitches (or lack thereof) to women that really got me thinking that I should share her with those of you who aren’t already familiar with her work. I’m not just saying this because she promised me a stack of free books, but you should really add her various blogs to your daily reading list.

Holy CRAP Part Two!

20 Nov

Okay, I think my pregnancy brain has returned… and it’s been  4 1/2 years since I was pregnant! Worked my patooty off all day yesterday on my outline (okay, in between blogging breaks). Then today started off rushed and ended up being just a crappy day. Had lunch with a friend (the one bright spot of my day), but when I told my bosses I might be back a bit late because I had to drive to meet her, I got serious flack from one of them (an associate of all things!) That ticked me off royally. Then I got into it with a particularly cantankerous classmate and was steaming mad by the time I got into my car to head home.

So where does the pregnancy brain thing come in? My mental “schedule” had me set to pack for our trip on Tuesday night. As I drove home from class tonight, it suddenly dawned on me that I have a makeup class tomorrow and will therefore not get home until almost 10 p.m.!!! Argh! So when I arrived home at 8:30, I had to bake a cake, iron clothes and pull together pillows and blankets to take with us. Not to mention putting Pumpkinhead to bed (only a wipe-down and no books tonight!)

Chapin, of course, is away for business tonight. Little does he know that he’s on inflatable mattress pickup duty or that I the lady who bought our car wants to come by tomorrow night to pick up the title and drop off the rest of our money. And, of course, Chapin decided to mention as I was walking in the door from school (we were on our cells) that he’d volunteered me for a lunchtime errand tomorrow. Grrr. I was supposed to drop my grandmother’s suits off at Dress for Success (it took my Mom and her sisters 10 months to pack up her clothes after her death and I’m so pleased that they chose to give her beautiful, elegant clothing to this worthy cause), but I guess that can wait until next week.

Anyway, it is almost midnight and I’m waiting for the second cake to finish cooking so I can head off to bed. Yawn! I have a feeling this week is going to be a wild ride.

Mac Law Students

18 Nov

Have any of you upgraded to Leopard yet?  Think it’s worth it?  I really want to, but I’ll probably wait until after exams just in case.  I’m bummed because my school had it for $69 for like 3 days and I missed it!  Now the student price is $109.  Boo hiss!

Also, I love my Mac, but has anyone else had the case crack?  I must lean on the corner because there’s a strip that has come off twice now.  They replaced the whole thing last time but it’s done it again and I haven’t gone in to see them yet.  Such a pain!!

Candidates on Immigration

18 Nov

The New York Times has an article today focusing on the fine line that candidates in both parties are having to walk between seeming to lenient or too harsh on the immigration issue. I think they just want it to go away, but obviously the public cares about this issue and wants change.

An ABC News poll conducted in September found that 54 percent of Americans believed that illegal immigrants do more to hurt the country than help; 34 percent said they do more to help; 6 percent said they neither help nor hurt; 7 percent were unsure.

“While agreeing with us on policy, people are nevertheless extraordinarily angry,” said Mark Mellman, a Democratic strategist. “The tone of the Democrats consistently fails to reflect that anger. In that sense, we’re out of sync with the public.”

Stanley Greenberg, a Democratic pollster, compared voter sentiment to the growing desire even among Democrats in the early 1990s for an overhaul of the welfare system, pointing to exasperation about illegal immigration especially among certain groups — those with only a high school education, African-Americans and people in rural areas.

It will be interesting to see what Congress gets done in 2008, if anything, and how this issue ultimately plays out in the campaign.

Ew!

18 Nov

For the freak job that is trolling the ‘net for the answer to “how many AquaDots make a dose of GhB”, run, do not walk, away from my blog. Ick!
