Thoughts on the Book Club
Okay, this MILF thing is just silly. I thought it was funny at first but I’m on brain-altering drugs so don’t listen to me. I’ve been thinking and it doesn’t make sense, even in jest, to call ourselves by an acronym that is actually quite degrading to women if our focus is on books that will help us and fellow women in the legal field advance professionally. So how about Women in the Legal Field (WLF) book club? Or any other suggestions? Creativity isn’t my stront suit. I think we should drop the “Mothers” part so that any female lawyers or law students who’d care to participate may do so.
I’ve finished the book and have lots of thoughts to share but it looks like Monique is the only other person who has. So forget what I said about Wednesday — let’s hold off until Friday or anytime over the weekend. My goal will be to post Friday night.

Is it degrading to call ourselves mothers? It’s not inclusive, sure, but I have no problem telling God and everyone about my baby.
If they don’t want to hire me as a result, I don’t want to work there.
Kim’s original blog name, Mother in Law, I always liked because it was pithy. The abbreviation “MIL” is ubiquitous on the net - I vote for a simple “Mothers in Law” book club, as well as a paragraph that states the group is open to all women law students and attorneys.

Shelley… you haven’t seen “American Pie,” have you.
Good, I’m glad you are abandoning the MILF club. No good ideas here for an alternate acronym, though.
I will attempt to at least open the book before this weekend.

MILF came from American Pie and means Mom I’d Like to F***. That’s all I meant about degrading. I thought it was a funny play on the acronym and then reconsidered that notion. Trying not to regress to the “Beavis and Butthead” years. Heh-heh.
And the only thing about Moms is that it doesn’t include great voices like Ana’s from “Think Like a Woman… Act Like a Man.” (See, Ana, I’m calling you out!)

Eek! No, I haven’t seen the film!

When I told my family about the book club lets just say my husband and daughter (15 yrs) looked at me and said…..
So I’m all for a name change, I think the club deserves to be respected and MILF was not going to get us there. Although, I thought it was funny to play of the acroynm as stated by PT-Lawmom.
How about Women in Law (WIL)?

I noticed you have a book club selection, you might look at Carolyn 101 it is great read. Small and detailed, lots of good adivce from Trump’s previous right hand.
She addresses questions sent to her from working women and mother regarding everything from life/work balance, working with an ego like Donald Trump to managing your career.
Just thought I would suggest it.

I agree with the name change suggestion. I finished a while ago (what else do I have to do?) and am ready to discuss whenever y’all are. But those of you in law school have bad timing with finals looming. (And I am now doing a happy dance because I don’t have to take another test again, ever. Woo Hoo!)

I just want to say - when I said MOTHERS IN THE LEGAL FIELD, I 100% forgot about the acronym and its other meaning. I have never seen the movie, and only heard the acronym over the summer when one of the bar exam lecturers was referred to as a MILF, and I didn’t understand it then, either.
I just didn’t want to be excluded based solely upon my graduation from law school.

Sorry, Z, I just shouldn’t have run with what you OBVIOUSLY meant as a joke! It just tickled me at the time. Sometimes I’m 13 again.

I too have a middle-school mentality. I find MILF amusing. Sure, not good for being taken seriously as a book club, but it still makes me chuckle.

I heard my name.
How about LAW - Literature And Women. (legal aspect implied by the acronym)
or
BILL - Books of Interest to Legal Ladies
