ISO Music to Study By
Dear Readers,
I need a change. My favorite classical CD from undergrad broke in two during our move and I have been unable to find a good replacement. I have started downloading random selections from iTunes, but would love some good recommendations for jazz or classical songs that you like to study to (i.e., ones that won’t put you to sleep or distract you from your reading). Thank you in advance for your much-needed help.
Fondest regards,
PT-LawMom

Anything Mozart’s always a good choice. This past spring I listened to a lot of Schubert while outlining, specifically Mass in G (we were performing it for an Easter concert). I think it helped my Contracts grade.

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue is my favorite jazz album of all time. It’s music to work or relax by. It even put Hamlet to sleep one time.
Glad the Cymbalta is working!!

I like solo piano to work by, so I have a lot of that (as well as jazz and other classical).
Lots of Bach. The English Suites (1, 3, and 6) played by Murray Perahia; The Goldberg Variations, played by either Perahia or Glenn Gould; Two- and Three-Part Inventions, played by Gould.
Chopin Nocturnes, played by Vladimir Ashkenazy.
Piano Classics From the World of Jane Austen - a lovely album.
Mozart Piano Trios, played by the Mozartean Players.
Sergei Nakariakov on trumpet, “No Limit”.
Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez,” played by Parkening — good when you need something energetic.
For jazz, I agree with Kind of Blue, and also Miles Davis’ Sketches of Spain.
The guitar trio of Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola, and John McLaughlin.
The Roger Kellaway Trio - great for working or relaxing.
The Roger Kellaway Cello Quartet - just fabulous.
The Bill Charlap Trio - Written in the Stars, or Somewhere.

I like Yo-Yo Ma’s Obrigado Brazil. Also anything by Rachmaninoff. The old Getz/Gilberto album is a classic jazz. Ooh, I have a great Fazil Say classical CD, too. Emerson Sting Quartet - Art of Fugue. I am kind of a junkie on this stuff and have a big mix of CD’s. email me.

Everyone’s suggestions are wonderful, and I’d second the Obrigado Brazil. Also Y-Y M’s Bach Cello Suites — I’d crafted a labor & delivery playlist, but as it turned out, all I wanted to listen to was Ma. Also, Jesse Cook — lovely guitar music.
I’d recommend Handel’s Water Music and Beethoven’s Dances — upbeat and interesting without being distracting.
I actually listened to German Punk when studying — the lyrics stay below the radar unless I concentrate, and it’s oh-so-upbeat.
