Licenses for Undocumented Immigrants
New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer’s push for driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants is starting to gain support from security experts while still receiving a large outcry from misguided conservatives who think that this measure would encourage lawlessness and terror plots.
Mr. Spitzer, a Democrat, has called the response hysterical.
“We are not talking about letting more people into this country,” he said, “we are talking about being practical about those who are already here.”
In other immigration news, the Houston Chronicle reports today about the increased instances of local enforcement of immigration laws and the potential for harassment and racial profiling. The Chronicle reports that jurisdictions nationwide are working with ICE to notify them when undocumented criminals are arrested. While I think that it is important to keep criminals out of our country, I am very concerned that officers will take the law into their own hands and start to target minorities and otherwise use these loopholes to go after certain segments of the population. As the article mentions, some police personnel have entered households under the guise of “noise complaints” and “code violations”, only to request ID from all household members and arrest those without legal documents. That is a real abuse of power and doesn’t fit with the intent of the law to focus on the true criminals out there.
