Collapse of the immigration reform bill

10 Jun

This article in the New York Times suggests that the immigration bill collapsed Friday because opponents of the bill were mobilized and angry while supporters were happy about the legislation but not making much noise since it seemed likely to pass.

I can understand the objections of some of those featured in this article. Here’s the thing. If you have been through the LEGAL immigration process and have seen how arbitrary, frustrating and drawn out it can be, you would understand the need for reform. You would also see the wonderful benefits this country has to offer to immigrants and you might appreciate that
the United States is a country founded by immigrants. So, yes, I support immigrants and want a smooth path for people to come to this country. But just like anything that provides a benefit, it can be abused. A lot of the talk is about actions of a very small minority. If only people could meet more of the wonderful immigrant families who came here to live the American Dream and worked hard to achieve it. It’s sad to see the racist sentiments expressed in this article, especially since it’s slanted heavily towards Hispanics. :( Perhaps it’s naive of me, but I think people need to have a little more faith that others’ intentions aren’t to cheat, steal and lie.

Rather than judging the actions of others, let’s work together to find a way for blue collar workers to provide necessary services here in a way that benefits both them and the United States? Let’s give pregnant women delivering in the U.S. the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps they were fleeing abuse or starvation in their homeland? The point is that we just don’t know and for every story of someone who came here to abuse the system in any way they could and commit crimes, there are probably 100 more stories of people who are good, honest, hard-working souls just looking to support their families.

Playtime

10 Jun

I’m one hour into my day of studying and Pumpkinhead just came into my office with his Spiderman backpack in tow and a big, sneaky grin on his face.
“What’s up, sweetie?”
“Oh, I’ve packed my swim toys, Mummy. I’m going to put my bag by the door just in case we go to the pool today.”

Where do they learn the art of manipulation-by-cuteness?

Netflix giveaway

10 Jun

5 Minutes for Mom is giving away a free six-month Netflix membership to a lucky Mom out there. We used Netflix for a while when Pumpkinhead was an infant. I got to rent all sorts of old movies and TV shows I’d meant to watch but never gotten around to. I hate catching reruns when I’ve never seen the early sequence of shows.

P.S.  The Closer is back on June 18.  Am I the only one that LOVES that show?  I’m so glad it’s the only summer show I care to watch because otherwise I’d be in big trouble.  And thank God for DVR.

Law school’s negative effects

10 Jun

Well, if this study is correct, I’m in good shape so far. Profs. Kennon Sheldon and Lawrence Krieger studied students at two law schools and found that both sets of students “declined in psychological need satisfaction and well-being over three years.” Uh-oh… BUT, where faculty were more focused on educating the student to succeed (versus publishing and just showing up to torture their students), that “predicted better well-being in the 3rd year and also a higher grade point average, better bar exam results, and more self-determined motivation for the first job after graduation.”

I have some really friendly, encouraging teachers this semester so at least I’m starting out on the right foot. All of the attorneys I know tell me, “Law school is hell. You don’t go there to enjoy yourself. It’s like a three-year hazing.” Fun. I am hopeful that they are exaggerating a bit (they all went to Ivies so maybe it won’t apply at my T2), but I guess we’ll see as time passes. I don’t want my well-being to plummet even before I’ve entered a soul-sucking legal job.
