Onsite Daycares at Law Firms
Law.com had an article last week about how more firms are considering on-site childcare facilities to make their firm more attractive to females. Hello? YES PLEASE!! And I would imagine this would make it more attractive to ALL attorneys, not just females. If my son was downstairs, I could visit him at lunch, take a quick coffee break pop-in, etc. They'd have to give employees preference (no sense having onsite daycare if you can't get in!), and they'd have to try to set up extended hours to accomodate attorney work days, but I think this would be an amazing benefit. <Much better than just backup care. Who needs backup care anyway? The reality is that when your kid is too sick to go to daycare, they can't go to backup care. And unless you have a nanny or in-home provider, most daycares rarely close. I know that Discovery in MD keeps making the Best Places to Work list in large part due to their childcare facility. Apparently Arnold & Porter has one, too. I think I speak for all Mommy future attorneys (and current ones) when I say, "Take heed of this article, law firms!"

I would Love a daycare like that. The firm I worked for last summer said they really wanted one, but there are So many safety codes for daycares that it wasn’t feasible. Apparently you have to be on the ground floor and have at least three exits leading outside (in Chicago anyway). When you’re in a huge sky scraper downtown, its hard to get ground floor real estate. It would be nice though…

I would kill for onsite daycare. Our firm won’t even consider it even though it’s definitely large enough to make it financially feasible.
I know USAA here has on site daycare & everyone I know who works there LOVES it.
